Pacific Palms Recreation Club – Elizabeth Beach

 

 

My work was shown in a joint exhibition at the Lakeside Gallery which lasted for six weeks over the Christmas holidays.

It is an excellent space for large works.  I also entered the annual Pacific Palms art exhibition in June 2022.  The painting opposite won second place in the Climate Change section.

ARTIST PROFILE

Hilary Hatfield’s abstract expressionistic paintings immediately pull viewers into her world, revealing different facets of their composition over time. From their bold, vibrant coloration, to their expressive tactility, flow and balance, these pieces reflect the artist’s hope that viewers will first look at the details, allowing their eyes to travel over the piece with ease, before focusing on the abstract composition as a whole.

A well-traveled individual, Hatfield was born in the UK but spent many years in Africa before settling in Australia. Her work is largely informed by nature and the wilderness of both the African Bush and the Australian Outback. She describes with pleasure the way that both places have dramatic weather, exciting shapes, new textures and breathtaking colors. Abstract painting allows Hatfield to interpret these elements freely, so that her final pieces are open to the imagination and elucidation of her viewers. To that end, some of her paintings can be hung either vertically or horizontally. Hatfield prefers that nothing inhibits the viewer’s freedom to explore and discover. When it comes to experiencing these paintings, limitations would certainly be a shame.

Programme Notes

Hilary’s abstract expressionism pulls viewers into her world, revealing her rich experience of nature on three continents including the African Bush and the Australian Outback. Her bold display of of vibrant colour, textures and vaguely familiar shapes calls for the individual viewer’s engagement.

She describes her work as ” reflecting my emotional response to nature”, however she leaves its final interpretation to the viewer’s imagination.

The exhibit “From the Deep to Daylight” offers fourteen works of art that propel the viewer’s eye from the shadowy depths of the sea and it’s mysterious life, to the colour and beauty of nature brought to life by the sun.

Hilary prefers that nothing, including the viewer’s choice as to vertical or horizontal display, inhibit the freedom to explore each work.

The Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli, Sydney was a wonderful space in which to show my work.  My paintings explored the shadows, full of mystery beneath the surface of the sea contrasting with the colour and beauty above the water brought to life by the sun.

When it comes to experiencing these paintings , limitations would be an unfortunate loss to those who view and own work of this renowned Sydney artist.

“Celebratory and incisive, Hilary Hatfield’s paintings are inspired by natural beauty. She paints oceans, rock faces and rivers in nonintoxicating bright colours. Her textures are carefully observed, but still energetic. Paint is dabbed and flecked spontaneously to achieve a composition infused with movement. Her works fall somewhere between abstraction and straightforward representation. This is partly achieved because she frames her subject inventively, often in tight close-up or from an offbeat perspective that leaves out important information.

Often she paints intangible things, such as light glinting off sand or ripples moving across the surface of a pond.

Each canvas shows a moment in time highlighted by her treatment of light.”
